‘Plastic Fantastic’ at the Turnpike Gallery

Media Call: Press, photographers and other media are invited to preview Plastic Fantastic, ahead of its launch, between 12 noon and 2pm on Friday 8th December. Please contact Louise Clennell on 01942 404469 or Chris Dunbar on 01942 486937 to confirm attendance.

An exciting new art exhibition that explores the role of plastic in the modern world is heading to the Turnpike Gallery this winter.

Plastic Fantastic brings together the work of thirteen of the finest artists and designers from across the UK, and aims to challenge the idea of plastic as a material of mass production. The exhibition features quirky, unique and innovative designs for jewellery, lighting, furniture, sculpture, wall hangings and screens. The exhibition opens on Friday 8th December and runs through to Saturday 20th January.

Louise Clennell, Gallery Co-ordinator at the Turnpike, believes the exhibition has a universal appeal, “The work being exhibited is truly stunning and has an appeal to all ages. We all have a connection to plastic through our everyday lives and the artists appeal to that relationship through this accessible, yet thought provoking exhibition.”

Plastic Fantastic features the work of: Michelle Brand, Lois Carson, Stella Corrall, Gina Cottam, Alice Highet, Tamsin Howells, Susie MacMurray, Janet Mitchell, Melissa Rigby, Elina Smith, Kate Smith, Ruth Spaak, and Jason Taylor.

Louise continued, “Some of the artists explore environmental themes through their use of recycled plastics. Others experiment with new technology and materials, for example, Lois Carson’s Rowan series which uses holography, or Susie MacMurray’s Gladrags dress made entirely of balloons. Other works include chandeliers made from recycled plastic bottles (Michelle Brand), jewellery made by combining vintage fabrics with plastic resins (Tamsin Howells) and furniture that looks like a drawing (Elina Smith).”

The exhibition launch takes place between 6pm and 8pm on Friday 8th December. Most of the artists exhibiting will be present to discuss their work.

The launch follows the gallery’s Affordable Art Market featuring seventeen stalls selling ceramics, jewellery, paintings, hand made cards, illustrations, digital prints, wood and metal work, calligraphy and fabric toys by artists and makers from across the North West. This is a unique, chance to snap up a Christmas gift, or a special treat at an affordable price.

A programme of workshops for adults and children accompanies the exhibition throughout its run. Details can be obtained from the Turnpike Gallery, by calling 01942 404469 or via email at turnpikegalley@wlct.org. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
