Jubilee Park – Ashton’s master plan

Park lovers in Ashton are preparing for action with exciting plans to breathe new life into an historic green space.

The Ashton and Bryn Township Forum has set up a working group tasked with drawing up a master plan to regenerate Jubilee Park, which straddles Wigan Road.

And some of the suggestions already on the table include new paths, an entrance feature, a band stand, events area and woodland management. Other suggestions include better access for service vehicles and disabled park users.
The working group is made up of local people and ward councillors and its master plan has already received backing from Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust.

But now the group wants to hear what everyone else thinks, so it is throwing the master plan open to public inspection at Ashton Library. It will be on display at the library from Monday November 20 until Sunday November 26.

This will be followed by an open day on Tuesday November 28, when residents can come along and discuss the plans with members of the working group at the Queens Road Methodist Church next to the park, from 2pm until 8pm.

Township Manager Malcolm Coe says: “We are all excited about the ideas to improve Jubilee Park but nothing has been set in stone. We want to hear what the community thinks about the plans and whether they have any new or alternative suggestions for the rejuvenation of the park.”
“At present the plan is very much an aspiration for the future and one of the things we will be looking at is how to fund the proposed improvements.

“We would be looking for local people who would be willing to sit on a ‘Friends of Jubilee Park’ group whose main task would be to look at potential funding sources for the various projects.”

Malcolm adds: “We would urge anyone who has an interest in Ashton and Jubilee Park to come along to these events and get involved.”
Andrew Bond, Parks Regeneration Manager for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust says: "This is a unique opportunity for the local community to become involved in the park's future. An agreed master plan will provide a focus for local involvement and will demonstrate to external funding organisations some really effective partnership working. The long term development of the park needs to have ownership by all of the community to protect and develop this wonderful outdoor asset."
