New Youth Theatre Group for Lowton and Golborne

Young people in Lowton, Golborne and the surrounding areas, will soon have the opportunity to develop their acting skills in the heart of their community, thanks to a new theatre group being set up by Wigan Pier Theatre Company.

The new weekly drama workshops, run by professional theatre workers for those aged 12 to 15, will commence from Monday 20th November and are completely free to join. The new group has been set up by the theatre company thanks to a Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Small Grant of £5,000 from Douglas Valley Community.

Martin Green, Development Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said, “These sessions are ideal for anyone who likes acting, drama games, using their imagination, writing scripts, improvisation or even storytelling. The workshops are great social occasions and are really good fun to be involved in. They are also a chance to receive top acting tips from professional actors for free.”

Wigan Pier Theatre Company now runs ten free youth theatres across Wigan Borough. The youth theatre groups will all come together to perform at a borough-wide youth theatre festival next summer thanks to funding from Arts Council England North West.

Martin continued, “Since we started to develop the youth theatres in 2004, young people from across the borough have been offered lots of theatrical opportunities and have had the chance to receive high quality tutoring in their local area. We have also organised drama trips and offered opportunities to perform in Manchester and all around the borough”.

The theatre group workshops will take place on Monday evenings (7.30 to 9.00pm) at Lowton Youth and Community Centre, Newton Road, Lowton. For further information, please contact Martin Green or Stewart Aitken on 01942 709305, or please feel free to just turn up on the night.
