Photocall – Photographers/reporters are
invited to the charity football match cheque presentation at 10am on
Tuesday November 7 in the Mayor’s Parlour at Wigan Town Hall.
In footballing terms it was a true clash of the titans.
Two old rivals pitting their finely-honed skills against each other on
the field of dreams – with only one team emerging victorious and taking
the spoils.
Was it France versus Italy in the World Cup Final?
Nah, it was Wigan Council versus Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust at
Robin Park!
The spectacular display of footballing excellence took place over the
summer when two teams of hand-picked individuals from both organisations
took up the challenge.
And when the final whistle blew it was the twinkled-toed team from the
Trust who were Croatia to the council’s England, with the town hall team
being on the business-end of a 5-2 thumping.
But it wasn’t just football for football’s sake because the sponsored
match was arranged to help raise money for a very worth cause – the
Mayor of Wigan’s Charity Appeal.
Winning team captain Trust Public Relations Officer Chris Dunbar said:
“We had wanted to take on the council for quite some time and when it
finally happened it was the ideal opportunity to use the game to support
the Mayor’s Charity.
“It was good fun and we’d like to thank everyone who helped organise the
event and supported us both on the day and through donations.”
The match and a special ‘open mic’ session at Robin Park’s Champion’s
Bar, helped to raise £756 – taking the overall total for the Mayor’s
Charity to more than £13,000.
Mayor of Wigan Cllr Eunice Smethurst has decided to support the
borough-based domestic violence and abuse charity DIAS and Victim
Support.
The mayor will accept a cheque from team captains Chris Dunbar and Matt
Stockwell at the Mayor’s Parlour on Tuesday November 7.
Cllr Smethurst, who was in the crowd for the big match says: “It was a
great games and the Trust came away as worthy winners.
“Of course the real winner was the charity appeal and I’m really pleased
that both sides chose to lend it their support. The appeal has been
going fantastically well so far but there is still a long way to go and
we need the support of everyone in the borough to make it a real
winner.”
