Opening the Doors to Discovery in Platt
Bridge: New Library Set to Open
Remember, remember the first of November!
That is the date when an exciting new state-of-the art library will open
to the public as part of the ground-breaking Platt Bridge Community
First extended school project. Platt Bridge Community First is a first
for Wigan Borough and from 1st November the new public library will open
alongside Platt Bridge Community School and a new Sure Start Children’s
Centre.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) has invested over £170,000 to fit
out the library with an array of excellent facilities. The new ‘Explore’
theme has been introduced throughout the library to complement the
borough’s 15 other libraries.
The new facilities will include:
• a children's library incorporating 16 PCs (provided jointly by the
school), interactive white board, study space and over 8000 books;
• an area for teenagers including soft seating, Play Station and a PC;
• separate adult library incorporating 6 PCs, DVD/CD collection and over
6000 books.
Jacqui Boardman, Chair of WLCT, said, “These are very exciting times for
the library service and for all the people living locally to the new
facility. This is the first newly built library in Wigan Borough for 22
years and is symbolic of the huge changes the library service has
undergone over the last few years. We are looking forward to working
with the school and all of the other partners on site to provide a
vibrant community hub of learning, information and care that will be
second-to-none.”
The new library is part of Platt Bridge Community First, a huge
community hub at the heart of which is the newly built Platt Bridge
Community School, a merger of nearby Low Hall and St Nathaniel's. The
site also includes a Sure Start children's centre with 'wrap-around'
nursery and full day care and baby unit; a Family support centre, with
assessment areas for family and child welfare; a community health
centre, including GPs surgeries, pharmacy and a wide variety of health
services and a new Wigan and Leigh Housing area office.
The opening of the new library has meant the relocation of many of
WLCT’s library services from Abram Library. Plans are proposed for Abram
Library to become a new community-run centre that will include some
library services. WLCT will provide the centre with four People’s
Network computers and over 3,000 books. WLCT will also provide an extra
mobile library visit to Abram after relocation, until the new community
centre opens.
During the period of relocation to Platt Bridge, a part-time service is
in operation at Abram Library to ensure that customers have access to
services. For further information on the temporary opening times contact
Abram Library on 01942 866350.
