Leigh-born rhythm ‘n’ blues legend Georgie Fame is heading back to his
roots this November.
The jazz-influenced singer and organist will be appearing at Wigan
Borough’s premier music venue, the Monaco Ballroom in Hindley, on
Tuesday 21st November.
In what is a something of family affair, Georgie, born Clive Powell in
1943, will be performing all of his famous hits including the number one
singles ‘Yeh Yeh’, ‘Get Away’ and ‘The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde’,
accompanied by his sons Tristan (guitar) and James (guitar).
Georgie’s performance is part of a UK tour that celebrates a career
spanning four decades. His musical career began in the early sixties
playing piano in a string of backing groups including ‘Billy Fury and
the Blue Flames’. Georgie eventually led the Blue Flames himself and
became, and still is, one of the most accomplished organ players of his
generation.
Georgie said of his return, “This is going to be a fantastic night and
something of an emotional return for me and my boys. We are delighted to
be playing together just down the road from where I was born and we
promise to put on a great show. I’ll be playing all of my most popular
tunes plus a few little surprises.”
The list of illustrious music stars Georgie has collaborated with
includes Van Morrison, Gene Vincent, Prince Buster, Muddy Waters, Eric
Clapton, Joan Armatrading and Bill Wyman, who once said, “There’s no
point in doing it when Georgie Fame can do it ten times better!”.
Brian Yates, Manager of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Leisure
Venues, said, “Georgie Fame is a class act. Having someone of his
calibre playing the Monaco is a great boost and proves that we can
attract big name stars to the borough. We are looking forward to a
wonderful night’s entertainment full of all the energy that Georgie is
renowned for. We are urging people to buy tickets early to ensure they
don’t miss out.”
Tickets for ‘Georgie Fame and Sons’ are on sale now, priced at £12 (£10
concessions). Doors open at 7.30pm on Tuesday 21st November at the
Monaco Ballroom, Hindley. Please contact the booking office on 01942
