Calling All the Heroes! Search is on for Wigan Borough’s Sporting Heroes

It is common knowledge that Wigan Borough has an unrivalled sporting heritage and now is the time to honour all those unsung heroes who work tirelessly to maintain that reputation.

Nominations are being sought for the 2006 Wigan Borough Sports Awards. The awards, now in their 7th year, are organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit and seek to recognise and celebrate the wealth of talent and commitment to sport in the community.

Organiser Lizzie Hendley, from the Sports Development Unit, said, “Last year’s awards were extremely successful and very rewarding for everybody involved. We have a huge number of talented and committed sports people in the borough and it’s crucial that they get the recognition they deserve. I would encourage anyone who knows a sporting hero in their area or at their local club to put them forward for one of the awards.”

The awards up for grabs this year include: Coach of the Year; Club of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Sports Achiever of the Year and Disabled Sports Performer of the Year. The Unsung Hero in Sport has been renamed the ‘Wilf Brogan Unsung Hero Award’ in honour of recently deceased former Mayor Wilf Brogan, who dedicated his life to championing sport in Wigan Borough.

Joe Fitzsimmons, winner of the 2005 Unsung Hero Award, said, “Winning an award such as this is a great boost, not only for the individual, but for the club as well. All of the sports volunteers in the borough work tremendously hard and I would encourage people to take the time to nominate someone they feel deserves an award. I knew Wilf Brogan well. He was a great ambassador for sport in Wigan and I am delighted he has been honoured in such a way.”

A special awards dinner will take place at the JJB Stadium on Friday 26th January 2007 for all those short-listed, with the winners being put forward to the Greater Manchester Awards ceremony taking place in March.
