Never Forget! More People Wanted to Help Honour Memory of Holocaust

It is a moment in history that the world can never be allowed to forget, and here in Wigan Borough it is still resonates with all sections of our community.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, in partnership with Wigan Council, have again pledged their commitment to commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday, January 25th, 2007; in the week that Allied forces liberated the Auschwitz Death Camp in 1945.

Organisers from the Trust’s libraries and heritage services team are asking people to come forward now to take part in this important national event that remembers not only those who died in the Nazi Holocaust, but all victims of genocide, or persecution due to race, religion, or sexuality.

Stephen Lythgoe, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Reader-in-Residence, said, “We want to involve a wide range of people in the ceremonies. We would particularly like to hear from anyone who has a personal story to tell; Holocaust survivors, people from the asylum or refugee communities, ex-servicemen who encountered the camps, or anyone whose life has been affected by genocide or persecution. If anybody doesn’t feel able to speak about their experiences publicly we would be glad to interpret them on their behalf.”

Anyone wishing to attend or who feels able to share their experiences in a brief statement, or through poetry or music, can contact Stephen Lythgoe on 01942 404566 or via e-mail: s.lythgoe@wlct.org.

In 2007, there will be two Civic Ceremonies of Commemoration on Thursday 25th January; in the Atrium, Wigan Town Hall from 10.30am, and in the Derby Room, the Turnpike Centre (Leigh Library) from 1.30pm. The Mayor of Wigan and other civic dignitaries will take part.
