Painting Pictures with Words: Bevan and
Street team up at the Turnpike Gallery
One of Britain’s leading figurative painters, Tony Bevan, will be
exhibiting a personal selection of his works at the Turnpike Gallery,
Leigh this autumn. The exhibition also features the writings of Peter
Street and opens on Saturday 7th October and runs through to 25th
November.
Containing paintings exploring the various themes Tony has investigated
over the past two decades including, the human face, architectural
structures and more recently, the ‘still life’ works of studio
furniture, the exhibition will also include some work not seen in public
before and a film of his recent major exhibition at IVAM in Spain. Tony
has been at the forefront of British visual arts since his first
exhibition thirty years ago.

As a counterpoint to Tony’s creations, the Gallery has commissioned
Atherton-based poet Peter Street to write a poetic accompaniment to the
images. His poems mix painful memories with humorous observations, and
provide a unique way into Tony Bevan’s work. The poems have been
published alongside reproductions of the paintings in a catalogue
produced to accompany the exhibition.
Peter Street is looking forward to the opening of this unique
exhibition, “This is an exciting project and certainly the first time I
have heard of a poem being used to accompany paintings. The poems do not
provide an interpretation to the paintings. It is more that they are a
soundtrack to accompany Tony’s works and are there to be appreciated in
their own right.”
Martyn Lucas, Visual Arts Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust,
said, “We are delighted to be showcasing the work of such a prestigious
artist such as Tony and equally delighted to have Peter involved.“
Martyn continued, “We continually reach out to the community to give
them opportunities to enjoy a variety of visual arts. Peter’s words will
be a welcome guide to Tony’s artistry for newcomers and Turnpike
stalwarts alike.”
The Tony Bevan and Peter Street exhibition is officially launched on
Saturday 7th October at the Turnpike Gallery, Leigh. Entrance to the
exhibition is free. An additional book launch and poetry reading by
Peter Street will take place from 7pm to 8.30pm on Thursday 12th
October. Please contact the gallery to obtain a free ticket.
A series of interactive workshops and events will take place to
accompany the Tony Bevan exhibition. Poet and artist Phil Davenport will
lead an experimental poetry workshop for adults. Taking the exhibition
as a starting point, he will introduce participants to cutup and
concrete poetry techniques. This workshop takes place from 1pm to 3pm on
Tuesday 17th October. Tickets are free but must be pre-booked via the
Turnpike Gallery.
Led by experienced artist and tutor Paul Brotherton, a five week adults
course in painting and drawing skills, will take place from 7pm to 9pm
on Wednesdays. The sessions will take place on 11th and 18th October,
1st, 8th, and 15th November. No previous experience is necessary and all
materials will be provided. The cost of the course is £15, payable in
advance. For more information please call the Turnpike Gallery.
