A unique and fun project in Astley, near Leigh, is on the look out for families and tiny tots who want to enjoy some green fingered fun in their own specially designed garden and learn about the values of healthy living from a very young age.

A series of harvest-themed fun activities especially tailored for pre-school children are being provided at an exciting re-launch of the project at Astley Tots Plot, Parkfield Avenue in Astley on Friday 29th September between 10 am and 12 noon.

The venture is a partnership between Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Sure Start that aims to provide an area of safe play for children aged five and under. It is also designed to promote respect for green spaces and the benefits of healthy living to young minds and families in a fun way. The Tots Plot has been open for just over one year and has been enjoyed by hundreds of budding young gardeners.

Anne Cockram, Park Community Liaison Officer for WLCT, says, “The garden provides a wealth of structured activities such as flower painting and growing fruit and vegetables and all equipment is provided free of charge. Special events and days out are being programmed into the annual calendar to make the area a real hub of fun and activity. Many of our original visitors have now graduated to school, so we would like more little tots and their parents to come along on Friday to join in the fun!”

The special morning session runs from 10am to 12pm on Friday 29th September. Michelle Smiles, WLCT’s Early Years Ranger has arranged a variety of activities to show what is available at the Tots Plot and will be available to provide information to the public. For further information contact Anne Cockram on 01942 488552.
