Wigan Unites to ‘Read a Book in a Day’
The people of Wigan Borough are being
challenged to unite as one to help ‘read a book in a day’. On Friday 8th
September, teams of costumed librarians will be patrolling Wigan
Borough’s communities encouraging local people of all ages to help them
read Roald Dahl’s ‘Matilda’ front to back.
Writer and broadcaster Stuart Maconie, who is also Patron of Wigan
Libraries, will be amongst the teams encouraging people to join in this
fun initiative. The event is part of Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s
‘Free Weekend Of Leisure’ which aims to encourage people to get active
in a variety of ways from sport activities to events in libraries and
parks.
Anne Turner, Access and Inclusion Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture
Trust, says, “We aim to show that reading is a fun activity that is an
important part of our vision to get Wigan active. Taking part in
mentally stimulating activity is as important as getting physically
active and reading is something that can be a shared experience. We
chose the book Matilda to mark Roald Dahl’s 90th birthday which is fast
approaching and also because it has a positive message about
self-discovery.”
The teams will be out and about across the borough (from Atherton, right
across to central Wigan) in local shopping areas, libraries, and even
schools. The aim is to complete the 21 chapter book by the end of the
day.
Stuart Maconie will read the first page of the book when his team visits
Hawkley Hall High School in Wigan. Stuart says, “We hear much these days
about eating the right things and taking exercise. But it's just as
important to keep your mind as fit and active as your body and a great
way to do that is reading. Reading is a very important and enjoyable
social activity too; you can enjoy it with family, friends and partners.
For all these reasons, I'm delighted to be Wigan's Patron of Libraries
and part of this fun and worthwhile initiative. “
Over the weekend of Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September the library
service will also be leaving a series of ‘quick read’ books across the
borough for people to pick up and read. The ‘quick reads’ will be
available in a variety of places including park benches, bus stops,
coffee shops and sports centres.
