Young people in Leigh are being given a opportunity to take part in a
range of free after school activities thanks to the ‘Leigh Neighbours
Project’.
Leigh Neighbours Project, led by Leigh Township Forum, is working
towards creating stronger communities in the Leigh area and providing
greater opportunities for young people of all backgrounds to enjoy a
variety of activities in their local area.
As part of the project Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) is
appealing for anyone aged 11 to 16 to register their interest in a new
after school programme that, subject to sufficient interest, will start
in the Autumn. WLCT is hoping to offer access to:
• art, dance and performance opportunities
• football and rugby league coaching
• junior football and rugby league teams for both boys and girls.
John Hesketh, Community Regeneration Manager, for WLCT, says, “We are
hoping to put on these activities to help encourage greater community
cohesion in Leigh. The ethnic minority population in Leigh has increased
over the last few years and we believe that by encouraging children of
different cultural backgrounds to play and create together we can help
to create a positive environment in which young people can grow up
together. There are lots of exciting opportunities to enjoy, so I would
urge young people or their parents to register their interest as soon as
possible.”
Those young people taking part in the activities will also be offered
free tickets to Leigh Centurions and Leigh RMI fixtures.
Anyone wishing to be involved in these free activities should contact
John Hesketh at
j.hesketh@wlct.org or by calling 01942 486916 (after
18th September). Alternatively, you can also write to John at the
