Arching Out for Better Health

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Active Living team are offering free Archery taster sessions to the over-50s at Robin Park Arena during September. The sessions are for people unfamiliar with the sport and as part of the Trust’s Getting Wigan Active initiative the sessions will teach the basic skills and techniques needed in Archery.

“We’re looking at providing a fun session for those looking to try something new. Our taster sessions have always proved popular and are a good way of getting out to try new activities and meet new people.” says Alison Molloy, LEAP Support Officer for the Trust. “It’s a great way to keep fit and has a good social scene. It doesn’t matter if people have no experience in archery, everyone is welcome to come along.”

Archery is one of the oldest arts still practised and evidence of ancient archery has been found throughout the world. Although archery probably dates to the Stone Age (around 20,000 BC), the earliest people known to have used bows and arrows were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted archery at least 5000 years ago for purposes of hunting and warfare.

The Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) is the recognised Governing Body for all forms of archery in the United Kingdom and is currently responsible for approximately 20,000 members.

Fully qualified instructors will conduct the sessions at Robin Park Arena and all basic equipment will be provided. The courses take place on Tuesday 19th September and 26th September 2005.

Spaces for the taster sessions are limited, so advanced booking is necessary. For more information please contact Alison Molloy at the Active Living Team on 01942 488481.
