Young people from across the Wigan Borough and beyond are being given the
opportunity to witness Britain’s largest and most prestigious gymnastics
event of 2005 for free. Robin Park Arena and Sports Centre, will host the
British Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships over the weekend of 24th
and 25th September. All children aged under-16 can witness the drama of
this exciting event free of charge.
Held annually since 1896, the event comes to Robin Park for the third time
and this year will feature British Champion and Commonwealth medallist
Ross Brewer (pictured) and rising star James Evans. The most established
talents around will be battling hard for the medals alongside Britain’s
finest young performers, as they begin the countdown towards competing for
places at the 2012 London Olympics.
“This is a great opportunity for young people and their families to come
along and see some great athletes in action for free. Both the Trust and
British Gymnastics are determined to get more and more young people
involved in what is a graceful, powerful and dynamic sport,” says Mike
Lea, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Gymnastics Development Officer. “As
we approach the Olympic Games in 2012, it would be great to witness
gymnasts from the borough competing with a Great Britain flag on their
chest.”
In addition to the main event, on Friday 23rd September Robin Park will
open its doors from to gymnastic enthusiasts who wish to witness some of
Great Britain’s finest gymnasts (including Wigan Olympian Cherrelle
Fennell) close at hand and to have the opportunity to try out the
apparatus for themselves. Over 200 children have already signed up for
this taster day and anyone wishing to attend should contact Mike Lea on
01942 404952 for further details.
“We are anticipating a really exciting weekend and hopefully a lot of
young people will come along and take an interest in the sport in the
long-term,” says Ben Murphy from British Gymnastics. “The men’s
championships are always a close run affair and seeing the vigorous moves
these athletes make is much more exciting and awesome live in the arena
than watching it on television.”
Doors open on both days at 10.30am with Saturday featuring the Under-16,
Under-18 and Senior All Around Championships. Sunday features the Under-14
All Round Championships.
