Voluntary Group Celebrates Twenty-One
Years of Play
Wigan Play Association is ready to party!
Wigan Play Association, a group of volunteers (with over 350 members) that
plays a vital part in providing voluntary playschemes to thousands of
children across the Wigan Borough, is celebrating its 21st anniversary at
Lowton Civic Hall.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust continues to be the main funder of the
organisation and Wigan Play Association is an active member of Wigan
Borough’s Cultural Partnership.
Deborah Freeman, the Trust’s Community Regeneration Manager (Play & Early
Years) says “It’s fantastic that the Wigan Play Association is celebrating
their 21 years of providing playschemes for the children of the borough.
The neighbourhood spirit and sense of fun that is created at playschemes
plays a vital part in community cohesion and the Trust is proud to be
working in partnership with the volunteers. I hope all the children will
have a really good time!”
Play is essential to the development of children physically, mentally and
socially and the Play movement in the borough continues to go from
strength to strength. 2,500 people attended the national Playday event,
held at Pennington Flash on August 3rd, up from 1,000 the year before.
The 21st Birthday Celebration takes place at Lowton Civic Hall on Tuesday
30th August (11am to 3pm). For further details contact Christine Bryan on
