Hot Fun In The Summertime

Image: Roller BladerSchool’s out for the summer and young people across the borough have a more exciting variety of free and low-cost activities to participate in than ever.  Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) have put together a wide-ranging programme of stimulating and exhilarating summer events taking place across the borough and beyond.

As part of WLCT’s vision Getting Wigan Active, the Trust’s wide assortment of service areas including Libraries and Heritage, Greenspaces, Sport Development and Youth Development have come together to provide a compendium of activities to please the active minds and stimulate the sporting limbs of young people across the borough.

“We are keen to encourage young people to take advantage of the freedom the summer holiday period offers, to get out and about across the borough and actively enjoy themselves,” says Taryn Pearson, WLCT’s Head of Lifelong Learning and Information, Libraries and Heritage.  “There is something for everybody to participate in and enjoy, as well as all the regular summer events and activities available at libraries, sports centres, Wigan Pier and in the borough’s beautiful green spaces.”

One of the most exciting highlights is a rollerblading trip to Rampworx on August 21st, the largest indoor skate park in Europe, for bladers, BMXers and in-line skaters; a similar event takes place closer to home on Sunday July 31st at Walmseley Park, Ince.  For the even more adventurous, there is a trip to the National Mountain Board Centre on August 8th, where young people and adults can enjoy the thrills and spills of this all-terrain sport.

Libraries will really come to life with a host of activities for young people such as, Captain Jack Tar at Abram on August 8th and the fantastic Reading Voyages at Abram and Ashton (25th July) and Aspull on July 26th.

For younger children, Leigh Library will be featuring America’s First People on August 2nd and the Wiend Children’s Library is exploring Hawaii and the Beautiful People on August 9th. Budding historians can enjoy the summer sessions at the History shop to discover more about the golden age of Victorian Wigan, in particular Victorian objects, transport and holidays.

Young sports stars and novices are invited to can attend a range of multi-sports clubs and camps organised by the Trust’s Sports Development Unit:

25-29th July 8.45-4.15pm Lowton Community Sports College

1-5th August 8.45-4pm Lowton Community Sports College

8-12th August 8.45-4.15pm Kingsdown High School

15-19th August 8.45-4.15pm Abraham Guest Community Sports College

22-26th August 8.45–4.15pm Hindley Leisure Centre

The Sports Development Unit together with the borough’s five sports centres also provide a huge array of coaching sessions and fun sports clubs including women’s football, basketball, tennis and netball. 

Highlights of the thrilling events taking place in the borough’s green spaces include the intriguing Bat Walks throughout August; Shake to the Samba on National Play Day at Mesnes Park (August 3rd); Birds Of Prey at Pennington Flash (August 17th) and the Three Sisters’ Treasure Trail (August 22nd).

Wigan Council’s Extended Learning Team (WOOSH) is also funding twelve exciting Summer Schemes during the holidays.  All the schemes this year are in designated schools with designated pupils but the team hopes to be able to open up their schemes to everyone next year.
