Street Entertainers to Woo the Crowds of Leigh and Atherton

The Flying ButtressesLeigh and Atherton are preparing themselves for a four-day-long explosion of fun live street entertainment. From Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th July, Leigh and Atherton town centres will become alive with the wondrous sights and sounds of some of the country’s hippest, funniest and most awe-inspiring street entertainers, as Hot On The Streets comes to town.

The Hot On The Streets Festival, organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT), celebrates the art of street entertainment through a combination of celebrated professional performers and showcasing the best in local talent in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the town centre.

Chris Wyatt, WLCT’s Arts and Festivals manager is looking forward to more days of sun-splashed fun, following the success of Hot on the Streets in Wigan. “Over three thousand people came along to the three day event we held in Wigan in June and despite the wet conditions everybody enjoyed themselves,” says Chris. “The quality of the acts on in Atherton and Leigh is wonderful and it’s great that people can come along for free and have some light relief during the summer holidays.”

Kicking off with four solid hours of free family entertainment at Jubilee Hall Grounds in Atherton on the 26th July at 11am, Hot On The Streets plays host to mime magician Jason Maverick; rock ‘n’ roll pranksters The Sneakers (pictured); barmy crowd pleasers Swank and the visually stunning Urban Canvas. Also performing are Atherton and Tyldesley’s very own dance specialists L and L Superstars and the Tyldesley Marionettes.
The fun then moves to Bradshawgate and Ellesmere Street in Leigh from Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th July where the crowd favourites are likely to be award winning visual comedian Matt Barnard; the gnome like Flying Buttresses; break dancing kings Physical Jerks and the enigmatic Bright Sparks. Joining the professionals between 12 and 2pm every day are fabulous local talents the Hohodza band, the Thistle Dance Society and the Broomfield Dance Academy.

The Sneakers“Adults and children alike are welcome to come along to any of the dates. It really is a day to put a smile on anyone’s face and many of the acts are interactive and enjoy getting the crowd involved,” promises Chris.

Hot On The Streets is a free event organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and is supported by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. For further information contact Chris Wyatt on 01942 486929 or at c.wyatt@wlct.org
