Double Festival Celebration for Borough's Young Movers
Lucky children from three primary schools from across the Borough have been treated to the colourful sounds and sights of the WOW Festival carnival atmosphere in their own playgrounds. A sparkling white stretch limousine carrying the WOW Carnival Band and costumed children from ‘Little Branches’ visited Westleigh Methodist School, Ince St Mary’s and Higher Folds primary schools this week. The visits were in aid of a double celebration. The Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) produced Kids Festival magazine has printed its tenth edition and the WOW Festival is fast approaching – this year’s event takes place at Mesnes Park, Wigan on 7th August. “It was great to see the children’s faces when the limo pulled up on their school playgrounds. When the WOW Carnival band appeared the children wanted to join in – they were really inspired by the drumming and the dancing,” said Michael Rycroft, Community Festivals manager for WLCT. “Both the Kids Festival and the WOW Festival are all about children and family activities, that’s why we wanted to bring the carnival atmosphere direct to the schools.” This year’s WOW Festival promises to be bigger, better and brighter than ever. There will be a carnival parade; artistic displays; a play area; a fun dog show; a fun football and rugby league festival and a medley of performances from artists from across the globe. The Kids Festival booklet, produced seasonally is a guide to all the fun activities that take place in the summer for children of primary school age. As part of WLCT’s ‘Getting Wigan Active’ campaign, the bright and exciting booklet aims to entice children away from sitting in front of their television screens during the summer holidays. It showcases all of the great physical, artistic and most importantly fun pursuits they can take part in, in a language that young children can understand.
