EDUCATION! EDUCATION! EDUCATION! UK’s foremost Jazz Festival hosts seminar by President of International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE). Wigan International Jazz Festival, much admired for the prestigious array of internationally renowned talent it has brought to the North West public over the years, has never forgotten that its roots lie firmly in the wonder of Jazz education. As the festival celebrates its 20th year, the programme of Jazz workshops and seminars has never been as invigorating. David Caffey’s (President of the IAJE) appearance on the 13th July clearly takes centre stage during a week long series of seminars taking place at Wigan and Leigh College. David, who is also an internationally renowned composer, will be presenting information at his seminar ‘How It Works!’ relating to the history, programs and aspirations of the IAJE. The IAJE is a member-supported association with over 10,000 members in 45 different countries. “In its 37 years, the IAJE has accomplished much that is noteworthy,” says David. “The fact that virtually every college and university in the United States has at least a student jazz band in residence, if not a degree program available in jazz studies, shows the major influence that IAJE has exerted upon music education. We are now working with our friends around the world to make this a worldwide phenomenon.” David continues, “Jazz is one of the world's great music art forms. As Jazz continues to grow and develop as an art form, the members of IAJE are committed to seeing that this music receives the worldwide attention and recognition it deserves.” Festival Director Ian Darrington is urging Jazz aficionados not miss the opportunity to hear the wise words and interesting stories of David and his fellow Jazz experts. “It is a real honour to have someone of David’s stature available to discuss the important work of the IAJE at the Jazz Festival”, says Ian. “This year more than any other, we are catering for all Jazz tastes and to have people like David, Lasse, James Morrison, David Butters and Duncan Lamont all sharing their vast knowledge is just as important as the evening performances themselves.” As well as David Caffey’s seminar, Jazz fanatics and music novices alike are invited to enjoy the other seminars and workshops taking place at the Conference Centre, Pagefield Buildings at Wigan and Leigh conference (all events are pay on the door):
The Wigan International Jazz Festival runs from 9th to 16th July, including celebrity performances from the likes of Manhattan Transfer, the Count Basie Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band and James Morrison.
