WLCT and SureStart provide ‘TotsPlot’ Safe Haven for Fun

Exciting times are on their way for all toddlers, parents and carers living in the Shakerley, Tyldesley and Astley areas of the borough!

A new ‘TotsPlot ‘ play garden on Parkfield Avenue, Astley that has been under construction for the past few months is being readied for its grand opening.

The venture is a partnership between Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Sure Start Shakerley/Tyldesley it aims to provide an area of safe play for children aged five and under. It also presents the ideal opportunity for youngsters to be involved with issues such as the importance of green spaces and health. The garden will provide a mix of structured activities such as flower painting and growing fruit and vegetables and all equipment is provided. Special events and days out will be programmed into the annual calendar to make the area a real hub of fun and activity. “After quite a wait the team are now chomping at the bit and can’t wait to get the project up and running. If it’s as successful as other similar projects in other parts of the borough then this community will benefit greatly,“ said Project Manager and Parks Community Liaison Officer from WLCT, Mike Berry. “The Trust is committed to getting people of all ages and backgrounds active and providing safe areas of green land where people can have fun and also discover things.  What better age to start with than the under-fives?”

Angela Winnard, Sure Start Co-ordinator added: “What a fantastic facility this will be! The outdoor play area with climbing frame, slide, bikes and growing plots will give little ones fun and freedom to explore and to learn through play.  The indoor play area will provide space for activities, whatever the weather.  We want members of the public to sign up to the Sure Start Membership Scheme. Everything is free and people will even get a gift when they sign up“. The official opening event is free to the general public and will take place on Tuesday 14th June 2005 between 10am and 2pm.  The Mayor of Wigan will be in attendance at 11am to cut the ribbon. There will also be a bouncy castle, face painters and other children’s activities.  All young people aged nought to five are invited to bring their families along to celebrate with us and join in the fun!
