Basketball League Proves Popular

Westleigh's victorious basketball squadHonours even for Wigan and Leigh schools!

A borough-wide basketball league for school children organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has proved tremendously popular this year. Teams from Leigh Bedford, Lowton, Hindley, St Edmund Arrowsmith, Leigh St Mary's, Standish, Westleigh and Orrell St Peter's High Schools took part in a very competitive Secondary School Basketball League that commenced in January this year. The final games were completed last week, Westleigh won the upper age group league (years 9/10/11) with Bedford coming second. St Edmund Arrowsmith were victorious in the lower age group (years 7/8) with Standish the runners-up.

The league was organised by WLCT’s Sport Development Officer Lizzie Hendley and run by specialist coaches Jason Hargreaves and Phil Boylan. "It was great to see so many boys playing for their school with such enthusiasm and passion. The boys displayed great talent and sportsmanship and I hope they will all continue playing", said Lizzie. “Basketball is a great way to keep fit and any level of sporting achievement helps children gain confidence and self-belief.”

The Trust also runs a Basketball Academy held regularly at Robin Park. Anybody interested in joining the academy, which is open to school years 5/6/7/8 and 9 for boys and girls of any ability, should contact Lizzie Hendley 01942 404995.
