Designs for Life – Region’s Best Head to the Turnpike |
|
|
Some of the North West’s most creative artists are heading to the
Turnpike Gallery in Leigh this winter. Designs for Life opens on Friday
9th December and runs to 28th January, with an opening event taking
place starting at 6pm. The opening day will also feature a high-quality
Christmas Gift Market. Featuring the work of four young, local designers, Designs for Life is an opportunity to see the range and quality of work being produced across the region. From mass-produced textiles and gift items to one-off commissions, the exhibition will give an insight into the design process from initial idea to final product. “All the artists featured in Designs for Life have a vibrant evocative style, reflective of the energy and enthusiasm currently surrounding the North West arts scene. We are delighted to be hosting such quality exhibits,” says Louise Clennell, Turnpike Gallery Co-ordinator. “We hope that everyone who comes along will experience something unusual and inspiring and we feel that this type of exhibition is particularly interesting to those who haven’t necessarily experienced an art gallery before.” Featured will be some of the highest profile artists currently based in the North West: • Bury’s Ruth Moilliet takes her inspiration from plants to produce dramatic, large-scale metal sculptures. Her choice of materials and scale is a playful contradiction of the delicate flowers and plants on which the sculptures are based. • Leigh’s own Dawn Michelle Seddon is a surface pattern designer, whose original designs is licensed for use on a range of fabrics and giftware and are manufactured in the UK and across America. Dawn now lives in Culcheth, near Warrington. • Hailing from Wales, but now resident in Wigan, Catrin Mostyn Jones has produced a collection of hand-built and press-moulded ceramic sculptural forms that have a strong sense of movement and a distinctive surface texture. • Wigan’s Ruth Isherwood employs techniques including hand and machine knitting and hand stitching to create brightly coloured, tactile sculptures from rubber, foam, metal, fabrics and plastic. (Both Ruth and Catrin have been Artist in Residence at Drumcroon arts centre, and Ruth was recently commissioned to create work for a new health centre in Ince, near Wigan). To coincide with the launch of Designs for Life, the gallery is also hosting a Christmas Craft Market. A relaxed alternative to the hustle and bustle of the crowded high street, the gallery is the perfect place to shop an unusual Christmas present, or something special. All the makers participating in the market are based in the region and produce a wide range of high quality, unique gifts including jewellery, handbags, calligraphy, paintings, prints, Christmas decorations and cards, textiles, glass and ceramics. Admission to the market is free with prices starting from as little as £2. Participating makers include: Adela Jones, Kevin Linnane, Elizabeth Smith, Nicola Thompson, Christopher Johnstone, Sue Devine, Saema Amin, Patsy Allen, Denise Baxter, Brian Whitmore and Katherine Kershaw. For more information please contact Louise Clennell, Gallery Co-ordinator or Martyn Lucas, Visual Arts Officer on 01942 404469, or turnpikegallery@wlct.org . The Turnpike Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 9.30am to 3.30pm. The gallery is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays. -ends- NOTES TO EDITORS: For further information on this News Release please contact Chris Dunbar, Public Relations Officer, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust on 01942 486937 or at c.dunbar@wlct.org Alternatively contact Wigan Council’s Phil Green on 01942 827369.
