From Small Acorns Grow Mighty Oaks

Young children from Astley, near Leigh, are learning how to lay the foundations for an environmentally friendly future, thanks to Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Parks team.

Next week is National Tree Week (23 November to 4 December) and to mark this important festival, the Trust’s Parks team will be working closely with SureStart and Red Rose Forest to do their bit to save the planet. Together with Year One children from nearby St Stephen's CE Primary School, they will be planting Ash and Silver Birch around the TotsPlot project on Parkfield Avenue.

The planting will take place at 1:30pm on Wednesday 23rd November at TotsPlot. Some of the children from TotsPlot and their carers will also be giving little potted trees to local residents with a message of hope for the future.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise young children's awareness of environmental issues. After helping to plant the trees all children taking part will receive a young oak tree in a pot to remind them of there efforts," says Mike Berry, the Trust’s Parks Community Liaison Officer. “The TotsPlot is designed to educate young children about the importance of respecting nature and getting them involved in such a fun scheme can only reap positive benefits for the future.”

Environmental charity The Tree Council, a partnership of organisations working together for trees, started this annual festival in 1975 and it quickly became a highlight of the calendar, launching the planting season and celebrating trees and woods. Over 20 million trees have been planted as a result and many millions of people have been involved.
