20 Years in Jazz: Clayton-Hamilton make Wigan Return |

After 20 years in the Jazz business, the Los Angeles based all star band
The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, return to Wigan on November 22nd as
part of their celebratory European tour. Having only played in the UK once before, at the 2004 Wigan International Jazz Festival, the nineteen-piece orchestra return to Wigan to play the Monaco Ballroom in Hindley in what is another UK exclusive for Wigan. Wigan Jazz Club in collaboration with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has arranged the exciting one-off concert. Led by drummer Jeff Hamilton, bassist John Clayton and brother Jeff (saxophone), the band, who rarely perform outside of the US, are coming to Wigan following concerts in Switzerland and Germany before they return stateside to record with Gladys Knight. “The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra really shone at last year’s Jazz Festival, for many they were the star performers,” says director of the Wigan International Jazz Festival, Ian Darrington. “It’s great to have them here as the festival is also celebrating its twentieth year in existence, so we have a lot in common. We are really privileged to have them perform in Wigan again because it is only the second time ever that they’ve played in this country.” Jazz connoisseurs will relish the chance to see some of the world’s finest jazz performers in action, including tenor saxophonist Ricky Woodard, trombonist George Bohanon and legendary 86-year-old trumpet player Eugene 'Snooky' Young who for many years graced the line-up of great Count Basie Orchestra. “This is major step forward for Wigan Jazz Club. We are all excited to welcome such a ‘super-group’ back to Wigan. We think many jazz fans, not only locally, but from across the country will be taking advantage of this rare opportunity to see such a talented band in the flesh,” enthuses Peter Brookes from Wigan Jazz Club. “The Monaco Ballroom is the ideal setting for Clayton-Hamilton’s explosive style of big band jazz. We have over 650 seats available so we are expecting a good audience.” The concert takes place on Tuesday 22nd November 2005 and commences at 8.00pm.
