Premier Play for Firs Park
Firs Park in Leigh celebrates the opening of
a new play area packed full of larger than life play equipment, unique
to the local parks of the borough.
The Play area, part of a joint initiative between Wigan Leisure &
Culture Trust, local residents, Firs Park User Group and the National
Road Safety Initiative, has been developed in a bid to provide a safe
place for local children to play.
Working in consultation with local children to find out just what they
wanted at the play area, Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust’s Play ‘n’ Out
Team have developed what they hope will prove to be an adventurous and
exciting place for children to play.
The play equipment at the park consists of large-scale structures like
nothing ever seen in our local parks before. The structures are both
challenging and fun and include over 15 items of equipment including 2
parallel area runways and a co-operative group swing.
Philip Blackwell, Play Development Officer at Wigan Leisure & Culture
Trust explained: “The area has become an accident black spot and we are
really pleased that local children now have somewhere constructive to
play, keeping them off the streets and away from the roads. Firs Park
User Group has been instrumental in helping to get this project
completed and we would like to thank them for their continued enthusiasm
and support. We would also like to thank Barry Hammond the Architect of
the play area who has designed something quite spectacular at Firs
Park.”
The Firs Park play area development supports Wigan Leisure & Culture
Trust’s vision of ‘Getting Wigan Active’ by involving local people in
their community and providing opportunities to become more physically
active.
The play area has been funded by the National Road Safety Initiative.
