Wigan Passes Go Today

‘HAIGH HALL’ NAMED AS MAYFAIR OF NEW MONOPOLY TOWN

Wigan today Passes GO (Friday 21st October) … as the town gets its very own Monopoly board game.

The Monopoly Wigan edition is a special one-off for Christmas based on town landmarks instead of London ones.

It is being launched at Wigan Pier … as many thousands of games hit town shop shelves.

On the unique board much-loved town favourites like the JJB, the Pier and Haigh Hall replace celebrated London streets like ‘Mayfair’ and ‘Trafalgar Square’, following a massive public poll earlier in the year.

In all THIRTY-THREE town landmarks appear on the new Limited Edition board.

Other landmarks and favourites featured on the board include:

The Galleries, Wigan International Jazz Festival, Three Sisters recreation Area, Wigan Warriors, Wigan Athletic and Pennington Flash.

The top slot of Mayfair – price to buy on the board a mere £400, the same price as in the original Monopoly – goes to Haigh Hall.

Bosses at Haigh Hall - a listed building dating back to 1850 – are delighted with their new ‘’home’.

Tim Sharratt, Haigh Hall and Country Park Manager, says: "We are proud to have been chosen for this prestigious site.

“As Wigan's ‘jewel in the crown’ it is a fitting place for this building which has an affectionate place in many Wiganers hearts.

“It is the family home of Wigan - many families have celebrated their special occasions in the Hall, especially weddings."

Carole Tyldesley, Wigan Pier and Heritage Services Manager, says: "All at Wigan Pier are delighted to be represented in this way.

“The attraction re-creates local life over a century ago and gives a sense of place and belonging to the community.

“Wigan Pier has played a major role in the tourism economy over the past 18 years and it is appropriate that it should be recognised in this fun way."

The game’s promoter Graham Barnes says of the new board: “The game reflects the essence and spirit of Wigan.

“We are delighted with it and would like to thank everyone for their help with nominations.”

The product is official – London-based Winning Moves UK hold the licence from Monopoly owners Hasbro to produce this very special and unique regional variation of the world’s most famous board game.

The Wigan public were asked earlier this year to vote for which of their favourite sights should take pride of place on the customised board.

Wigan itself landed the game after a three-way ‘Pop-Idols’ style regional public vote. Wigan narrowly beat local rivals Bolton. Preston came third.
