Wigan Birthday Bash For Drumming Legend

When you turn 80, where would you like to be? Strolling down a seaside town promenade? Supping a pint with friends and family? Or better still, basking in the Mediterranean sun enjoying the fruits of your working life? For the man they call ‘Magnificent Delaney’ this is not enough.

On July 14 the jazz drumming icon who never seems to age, will be rolling in from his working retreat of Benidorm, to celebrate his 80th birthday where he belongs - on stage behind his drum kit - in front of a loving audience at the heart of this year’s Wigan International Jazz Festival.

Many Happy Returns: Eric Delaney

"I wouldn’t have it any other way!" claims Delaney, "What better way could there be for me to celebrate my turning 80 than performing for the very people who have made my career so exciting and fulfilled?"

The ever-modest Eric was born in Acton on May 22nd 1924 into a musical family (his mother played piano and his father banjo), at 10 he was already an accomplished drummer. There was no holding him back and by the age of 16 he was named Britain’s Best Swing Drummer. Eric became, in turn, Drummer of the Year and Musician of the Year, later winning the Band of the Year award. His hit record of Oranges and Lemons was chosen as the signature tune for a BBC show. Eric’s talent is one that has touched all four corners of the globe - He has played just about everywhere and with everyone.

Ian Darrington, Festival Director paid homage to Eric's durability, "To have a talent like Eric’s performing at the Festival is a great honour in itself. But for him to appear on his birthday it is a double celebration and it shows the high-esteem in which our event is held within Jazz circles."

Eric Delaney will be performing with the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra at the Mill at the Pier on Wednesday 14th July, tickets priced at £12 and £10.

The 2004 Wigan International Jazz Festival – sponsored by Manchester Airport, takes place between Friday 9th and Sunday 18th July. Also performing during the week are Phil Woods, Karrin Allyson, Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra, Jimmy Smith. Lynne Arriale, Gwyn and Will, Johnny Griffin, Clayton Hamilton and topping the bill – Dave Brubeck

Tickets are available from Wigan Tourist Information on 01942 825677.
