Wigan’s World Cup —
Trophy Time For Multicultural Match-Up
Everyone’s a winner when it comes to
giving racism the order of the boot. And in Wigan, football fans have
made a flying start by reclaiming the beautiful game from the mindless
minority.
As part of the national Kick Racism Out Of Football campaign
teams from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds came together on the
field of play in October to break down barriers, make new friends and
celebrate their love of the game.
The competition was backed by Wigan’s Leisure & Culture Trust, Wigan
Council, Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Athletic.
In the run up to the event the teams got the chance to share the pitch
with hometown heroes from Wigan Athletic when they were invited to take
to the field at half-time during the crucial clash against Gillingham.
Wigan’s Soccer Dome was the venue for
the competition, which saw teams drawn from the council, the Leisure and
Culture Trust, GM Police, Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Wigan & Leigh
College. They were joined by a large number of players from local sides
from across the borough.

United Colours of Football:
The teams competing in the Kick Racism Out Of Football competition join
Mayor of Wigan
Cllr Wilf Brogan on the field at the JJB Stadium.
Mayor of Wigan, Cllr Wilf Brogan has
also given his full support to the event and on Tuesday December 9th he
will be inviting all those involved to the Mayor’s Parlour for a special
presentation event. Cllr Brogan said:
“Racism is out of date and out of
order, so let’s kick it out and keep it out. Let’s all get on side
with all the good work that’s being done.”
“I am proud of everyone who took part
in this event. We should all share the goal of kicking racism out of
football and out of our communities.”
Organisers of the event say that this
year’s event has been so successful that are already planning next
year’s event and are hoping to make it bigger by involving even more
community groups.
