General Information
Our libraries offer a wide range of services to meet your educational, recreational and information need. There is a network of branch libraries throughout the borough where you can gain access to books on all kinds of subjects as well as compact discs, videos, talking books, newspapers, magazines and in some libraries DVDs. Reference and enquiry services and a range of events for both adults and children are also available.

When are the Libraries open?
Library opening times can be found by selecting individual libraries.

How do I join?
The library is free to join and open to all ages. Children aged under 16 will need to have their application form signed by a parent or guardian.

What if I can't get into a Library?
Those who can't get into a library can take advantage of our  Home library Service, or the Talking Book Service. You can also renew your library books over the phone. See our Outreach Services pages for more information.

Where is my nearest library?
You can find your nearest library by viewing the Library Locations.

What can I borrow?
Adults can borrow all categories of stock. Under 11-year-olds can borrow books, CDs, 'U' category videos and story tapes. Over 11-year-olds can borrow all material within age-related categories.

How long can I keep them for?
Books are issued for 3 weeks. Audio items are issued for 2 weeks. Videos and DVDs are issued for 1 week.

What if I don't bring things back on time?
Fines are levied on all items returned late, though children don't pay fines. If you are having problems paying your fines ask to speak to a supervisor.

What are the fees or charges?

How can I get a book that's not in the library?
You can place a reservation for any book in any Wigan library at a charge of 80p. We can obtain books from outside the borough at a charge of £3.50. You can also use our Outreach Services (Home Library Service, Talking Books Service).
