Advice Visits

Image: Shelves full of booksWe are able to provide advice on all issues relating to school libraries and books. Some of the areas that we can assist with include:

• Pre and Post OFSTED advice
• Stocktaking (including advice on maintenance and selection)
• Training programmes
• Strategies to promote your school library and encourage pupil use.
• Help in preparing for book promotions.
• All aspects of school library planning and design.
• Advice on computerised library systems.
• Advice on classification systems
• Advice on stock purchasing for your school library
• Information on Library Suppliers

We are here to help you make the most of your school library and its resources, and as a result we will tailor your advice visit to suit the individual needs of you and your school.

Each school is entitled to 1 x 3 hour visit per year (which counts as one loan credit). Extra visits are available at a further charge (See the Service Level Agreement for further details).

If you’d like to arrange an Advice Visit, please call us to discuss your requirements.

Advisory Services

We recognise that the world of books is a large one (there are around 10,000 children’s books published every year in the UK), and that finding the right answer, or the best-fit solution to your problem is not always immediately obvious.

Therefore, we’re happy to say that we’re here to help. Users of our service have access to our knowledge, and it’s a knowledge that we’re more than happy to share. Between our team we’ve got decades’ worth of specialist children’s book knowledge and, whilst for larger projects there may be a fee, we always ensure that we offer the best possible value.

As our name suggests, our service is dedicated to the requirements of schools, so if you’re looking for library-based assistance, give us a call. We’re always happy to help!

Wigan Schools’ Library Service can offer assistance in the following areas:

ü Support for Policy and Development Plans
In conjunction with you, we can offer advice and guidance in the writing of Policy and the production of development plans.

ü Design and Refurbishment of School Libraries
We can assist in both large and small scale projects, suggesting ways to maximise use of space and to brighten up existing libraries.

ü Support for Stock Management in School Libraries
Wigan Schools’ Library Service can provide professional guidance and support with the selection of book stock, as well as assisting with the identification of stock gaps and old, unsuitable material. We can also offer advice on how to maximise the impact of your library budget. In addition, we can provide information on the selection of library management systems.

ü Reading Promotion
As well as offering ideas to promote and develop reading within your school, we can also offer display techniques and ideas that will help you to maximise library interest within your school. You’ll find that when it comes to promoting reading, our enthusiasm is infectious!

ü Book/Resources Information
We can offer general information and assistance about any book-related issues that you may be looking to cover. Whether you’re seeking a reputable supplier, or need to know the best books to encourage reluctant readers to take the plunge into books, we’ll have the perfect answer!
