Reminiscence

Reminiscence forms a vital part of how we can record and preserve our valuable oral tradition; it is much more than just recalling past events as it enables people to communicate and share their memories. Sharing memories is a form of collective learning – it gives a different perspective on events, experiences and life in general. Reminiscence can raise self-esteem and confidence, have a therapeutic effect and be educational and enjoyable.

We can deliver reminiscence sessions to local groups at the community venue of your choice, as well as at the Museum of Wigan Life. We will provide original objects and photographs to handle and stimulate memories. We have reminiscence boxes, which cover themes of:
  • Home Life/Household Chores;
  • Holidays;
  • School Days;
  • Make Do & Mend;
  • Milk Bars & Mini-Skirts;
  • Now That’s Entertainment!
  • The Home Front;
  • Going out.
Sessions last for approximately one hour.

We can put together a number of sessions for your group, each following a different theme. Sessions can take place at your own venue and/or you may want to include a visit to the Wigan History Shop.

One very successful Reminiscence Project the Learning Team were recently involved in was the Brackley House Project. This pilot was undertaken with a group of ladies from a local sheltered housing unit. The project included a tour of Wigan Pier and reminiscence sessions on home life and holidays. The project culminated in a very enjoyable day out in Southport, with some well-earned fish and chips!
