Art with Strangers
17 May - 5 July
Art with Strangers presents artworks that have involved encounters with
people who started out as strangers. It has been organised specially for
the Turnpike by Angela Kingston, and includes, film, video, photography
and installation.
Today, increasing numbers of artists seek out people they would not
ordinarily meet in order to make art with them. Sometimes, the artists
and their collaborators have equal say and at other times, the artists
give the strangers instructions. This exhibition looks in particular at
art made by artists who have worked with just one other person or a
series of individuals, leading to work which is often highly considered
and revealing. Those involved have worked in intriguing ways to unlock
each other’s imaginations. Many of the people the artists have
collaborated with are usually anonymous and overlooked – late night
shopkeepers, a hospital patient, a homeless man and recent immigrants,
for example. The ‘stranger’ – the person who is held at a distance –
becomes in some ways known: their face is regarded, their presence is
felt, their voice is heard.
Participating artists: Jordan Baseman, Jeanette Bell and Anne Elliot,
Kathryn Boyd, Sonja Feldmeier, Charlotte Ginsborg, Adam Green, and Ben
Rivers.

Eat with Strangers
Saturday 28 June, 12.00-2.00pm
Eat with Strangers is a special event inspired by one of the video
pieces in the exhibition Art with Strangers. Pot Luck was filmed in New
York by artist Sonja Feldmeier, and features meetings between the artist
and immigrants in places where they could get their favourite food.
Earlier this year, we invited
local people to send us their favourite recipes: traditional recipes,
family favourites, recipes that reminded them of home or somewhere
special. A selection of the recipes we received will be prepared and
served at this event where you are invited to “eat with strangers”. Come
along and try something new and find out more about the food that is
special to people in Leigh. Free event. Everyone welcome.
Stairs and Derby Room
Local artists both professional and amateur are welcome to
exhibit quality wall-based work and small 3-D pieces in the
Stairs and Derby Room at the Turnpike Centre. |
