CREATIVE WRITING & READING
Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust supports and encourages a vibrant creative writing and reading culture through libraries, halls and other venues. We have reading groups, an exciting Literature Festival, and writing workshops and other events throughout the year.

WRITING
There are several active writing groups in the borough, and our community press co-operative, Towpath, publishes a wide range of quality volumes of poetry and prose.
Writing workshops take place in libraries and other venues. Contact Stephen Lythgoe (details below) for more information.

READING
Reading has always been popular, but it used to be regarded as a solitary pursuit, and not very exciting. The National Year of Reading, which started in September 1998, changed that! Nationally, a huge variety of reading promotion initiatives brought readers and librarians, publishers and bookshops together to re-invent reading as an active, exciting activity that everyone can take part in. Wigan Libraries have many successful Reading Groups, where people who enjoy reading can get together and discuss the books they love – and hate, and discover new authors and books in a friendly informal setting.

Events such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day are celebrated in all Wigan’s libraries, while the major adult and children’s book prizes are promoted. You will always find the short listed titles for the Booker Prize, the Orange Prize, British Book Awards (Richard & Judy), The Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the Carnegie and Greenaway Medals available from your library. We also promote and encourage such minority interest events as The Big Gay Read, Ebony Reads, and others. We provide quality titles for developing readers in all our libraries, including the complete range of Quick Reads titles. A wide range of Graphic novels, age graded for children, teenagers and adult readers are also available.

Events and Festivals for Readers
Since Easter 2004, the Annual Words Literature Festival has grown into a major attraction for readers and writers with a unique mix of author events, performance, and workshops lasting for two weeks.

As well as Words, Wigan Libraries arrange a programme of author events in various libraries throughout the year.
