Introducing Us Girls -  Active Women

Us Girls is one of the largest ever projects of its kind. The Active Women Consortium, led by StreetGames, will see 62 organisations work together to get 30,000 women participating in sport across the country.

The project is being delivered by the Active Women Consortium and is receiving almost £2.3 million of National Lottery investment from Sport England as part of the Active Women campaign to tackle the gender gap in sport.

The project will be delivered in 47 areas across England and will offer 16-25 year old women innovative and engaging ways to become more active, more often.  It is one of 21 projects being funded by Sport England to boost women’s participation in sport, especially in those who care for children or who live in disadvantaged communities, as they face some of the biggest barriers to participation.

Active WomenActive Women in Wigan

Wigan is one of the 47 areas across England to have received funding to develop sports and physical activity opportunities for women aged 16-25 years old and to break down barriers to participation.

The programme, delivered by Wigan Sports Development, aims to provide targeted opportunities to engage young women in sport and develop capacity to create both a vibrant and sustainable adults infrastructure.

A network of new coaches and volunteers will be created through access to courses, qualifications and coaching opportunities.  The up-skilling of local volunteers and coaches will contribute to the sustainability of sports sessions and the development of new teams and clubs in the borough.

Have fun, meet new friends and Get Active with Wigan Sports Development

Wigan Sports Development will be working in partnership with local organisations and clubs to develop a range of sports specific, multi-sport and physical activity sessions to help to increase female participation across the borough.

If you are an individual or a group of young women that are interested in taking up regular sports activities where you can get fit, active and socialise with like-minded women then check out our list of sessions available or contact Wigan Sports Development for more information or to suggest an activity in your area. For those with a more competitive side we will be organising a number of events and competitions throughout the year so keep a look out for these on the website.

You can also get involved in the sessions by volunteering or coaching with funding available to support individuals in gaining qualifications to support the development of a strong women’s sport infrastructure in Wigan.
