Get Active, Get Coaching

On 1st April 2009 Wigan Sports Development launches the 2009/10 Coach Education programme. This is the 9th year that the programme has run thanks to excellent support from the sporting community of the borough.

This year the programme will consist of over 50 courses covering a range of sports and activities from traditional sports such as rugby and football to more modern sports such as dodgeball. The programme will also include a wealth of generic courses such as Safeguarding and Child Protection, and First Aid. All courses and booking information can be found on the Wigan Borough Sports Council Website www.wbsc.org.uk.

In the Summer of 2007 the Wigan Sports & Physical Activity Alliance allocated £20,000 to Wigan Sports Development’s Coach Development Project. In the 18 months since then, 217 local coaches and volunteers have applied to the project with 151 applicants receiving either all or part of the total cost of the requested course. The project proved much more popular than expected and has been of great benefit to the sporting community of Wigan with the increasing cost of Coach Education courses. Wigan Sports Development are now making every effort to access other funding streams to replicate the project in the near future.

Anyone wishing to get involved in sports coaching should contact Rob Burrows Coach Development Officer on 01942 488495 or e-mail r.burrows@wlct.org.
