Active Coaching in Schools
Wigan Sport Development Unit’s vision for
Services to Education is to develop and increase opportunities for young
people to participate in sport and physical activity both within and
beyond the curriculum.
To engage and inspire all young people to continue to participate in
sport and physical activity and to provide strong links into community
and club sport through clear pathways. To ensure that all young people
continue to participate in sport outside of school and encourage
lifelong participation in Sport.
Wigan Sports Development believes that:
- Improving the quality and access to
Physical activity and Sport in Schools can offer a wide range of
benefits to young people
- Sport, delivered through the
curriculum and out of school extra curricular clubs, helps give young
people self esteem and confidence and the ability to work as individuals
and in teams
- Working Collaboratively with Key
Partners in CYPS will ensure more effective communication and improve
the clarity of direction and development in school sport and physical
activity provision
- A clear pathway from schools into
local clubs should be available to enable young people to further
develop their sporting skills, to increase participation in sport and
support talented athletes
- Promoting physical activity in
schools has long term health benefits including a reduction in obesity
and improved general fitness
- Participation in Sport and Physical
Activity in schools has a wide range of benefits for all young people
including improved concentration, development of social skills including
teamwork and leadership skills and raised self esteem
- Developing positive sporting
opportunities for young people in schools with diverse needs and provide
adapted and specific activities that ensures inclusion in all school
sport and physical activity.
Wigan SDU believe that involvement in
sport and physical activity helps children and young people to learn, to
develop leadership and team working skills and to develop personal
qualities such as self esteem.
By building on and improving the quality of existing PE and School Sport
opportunities available to children and young people in schools, an
increasing number of children will be guided into local sports clubs.
Wigan SDU values the full involvement of every child and young person,
whether as a competitor, volunteer or participant in Sport and this
strategy aims to impact on the delivery of PE and School Sport both
within and beyond the curriculum.
