WIGAN
PARTNERSHIPS FOR OLDER PEOPLE PROJECTS
(POPPs)The Active Living
Team is involved in a new Government backed initiative designed to
develop services to help older people live happier, healthy and
independent lives.
Wigan has been chosen as one of the first areas in the country to
receive funding from the Department of Health to develop the POPPs
programme locally. The Active Living Team’s role is to deliver “Stepping
Out”, a programme to provide older people with opportunities to improve
their health and well being, increase mobility,
include more social
interaction and to help maintain independent living:
• An Outreach Programme providing talks, exercise taster sessions and
six week courses to local groups and sheltered accommodation settings
• A guided health walks programme across the borough
• A wide range of low impact exercise classes and sports opportunities
in leisure centres and community venues
• A Senior Peer Mentor volunteer project
• Training opportunities and support for health and care workers who
work with frailer, older people to provide physical activity ideas in
sheltered housing, day centres, residential and nursing homes
• Targeted Functional Ability and Independent Living initiative
• Other training opportunities including chair based exercise and
Volunteer Health Walks training.
