Who in your community is your sporting hero?
Coaches, teams and sports clubs across the borough are being urged to send in their nominations for the 11th Annual Wigan Borough Sports Awards.
Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Sports Development Unit, the formal evening, planned at the DW Stadium for Friday 30 September 2011, is a celebration of the borough’s unsung sporting heroes.
This year residents can nominate members of the sporting community for their outstanding contribution to sport in eight categories:
Organiser Helen Browne, from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “Wigan is one of the most thriving and exciting sporting hotspots within the region and it is now time to thank, recognise and reward the tremendous dedication and commitment of all those people that have been involved over the last 12 months.
“The annual awards are invaluable when it comes to demonstrating the strength of our sporting community and it provides a unique opportunity to showcase the borough's talent of today and the future.
“The nominations campaign is a crucial part of the sports awards and the more people that get involved in the nominating process, the higher the quality the borough winners will be.”
Each nominee will receive a complimentary ticket to the awards evening as well as being presented with a certificate at the ceremony. Winners then go forward to represent Wigan at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards in November.
Helen added: “Wigan has had a number of Greater Manchester winners over previous years, including Mike Hack and Martin Gaskell 2010 Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the Year respectively, as well as Jenny Meadows 2009 Sports Achiever of the Year and we’d love a couple more at this year’s awards.”
