Sport in Your Community

How many times have you heard someone say 'it is because there is nothing for children to do' when talking about anti social behaviour.  Well carry on reading because there is plenty on offer when you know where to look!

"Get Active in Your Community" has been developed to meet the dual aims of 'Getting Wigan Active' (Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust) and 'tackling anti social behaviour and issues of youth nuisance particularly amongst young people' (Wigan Community Safety Partnership).  The programme provides sports opportunities for young people aged 8-18 in their local community at evenings, weekends and during the school holidays.  The regular sessions include football, climbing, archery, handball and dance.  Many of the sessions are free of charge.

The Sports Development Team works in partnership with local agencies to secure external funding to provide young people with regular sports activities in their local community.  The funding enables young people to access a range of activities using high quality facilities for its activities.

The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, speaking after attending a StreetGames session in Wigan in March 2008 said: “It is vital that we provide our young people with as many opportunities to take part in activities that have great short and long term physical and social benefits. The StreetGames sessions are an exciting concept and I’m glad to see it really coming to fruition and having such an impact.”

In 2008, over 22,000 young people participated in community sports activities throughout the Borough - an increase of 78% on 2007.  The climax to each years activities is the chance for young people of Wigan to take part in the NW StreetGames Festival at SportCity, Manchester every August.
