We’re always happy to help answer questions you may have, but please remember the following:

  • Factual questions only please! - We can only handle questions to which a documented factual answer exists. Hypothetical questions and requests to under take original research are beyond the scope of this service. We can’t analyse an issue, guess an answer or give opinions.
  • Please give us some background - Knowing the context of your enquiry can help us find the right answer for you, also letting us know where you have already looked for the answer and any further information can help us to help you.
  • Legal Questions - Please remember, if you have a legal problem you need a lawyer, not a librarian! We do not have legal guidance of any kind, so are unable to assist in matters of this nature. However, the Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help.
  • Projects, essays and assignments - We can help by pointing you to information sources on your topic.

Online Reference Shelf
We subscribe to a range of quality information sources, including Oxford Reference and the Encyclopaedia Britannica. As a library member, you can access this from the comfort of your own home or office. Information Direct
Information Direct is our online and telephone information service. People ask us all sorts of questions, so whatever you need to know, why not try us? Submit your question here - Wigan Library or Leigh Library. We will answer within two working days or redirect you to the source of information you need. You can also phone Information Direct on 01942 827619 or 01942 404557.

Alternatively, you can chat online at the Enquire Service, which is available 24 hours a day. It’s the library that never sleeps!
