Explore Book Awards 2008

Welcome to the Explore Book Award Webpage!

The Explore Book Award is Wigan and Leigh’s very own children’s book award. During the summer of 2007 we asked pupils from a selection of the borough’s schools to help us determine the shortlists for the 2008 Explore Book Award.

We asked the children and young people involved in the process to let us know what they thought about the books, and to give each of the books a star rating, with five stars meaning the book was an absolute no-escaping it, totally un-putdown-able, completely recommendable book! Phew! So in other words, we wanted to know which books had the X factor.

How were the books on the shortlists picked?
For the 2008 Award, all the books had to have been published in between 1st August 2006 and the 31st July 2007, and publishers kindly submitted the books for all the reviewers to read. Children and young people across a number of primary and secondary schools were involved in the selection process, and the feedback was so great that we decided to have two shortlists. One is aimed at children, and the other at teenagers.

And the shortlisted books are…
So, we guess you’re keen to know what the books are, right? There are posters promoting the books at schools and libraries across the borough, and the books that we want you to read and then vote for are as follows:

How the voting works
We’re asking you to read the books on the shortlist that most appeal to you and then to vote for your favourite.

You can pick up voting slips from your local library, and we promise you that every vote really does count. The books have been selected based on the views of children and young people within the borough, and it’s you that will help to find the winner of the first ever Explore Book Award!

All votes must be registered by Friday 9th May 2008, so make sure that you get your vote in on time! Every child and young person in our borough gets a vote, and every vote can make a difference so don’t waste your chance to have your say.

We are hoping that some of the authors of the two shortlists will be able to visit our borough’s schools and libraries; when we find out more about this, we’ll include the details on this website.

Is your school taking part?
All schools in the borough are eligible to take part in the Explore Book Award. Ask your teachers if your school’s taking part, and that way you can really get down to the business of finding the best book, wherever you are! If you’re a teacher and would like more information about the Explore Book Award, please call the Schools’ Library Service.

And the winning book is…

Well, we can’t tell you this! It’s up to you to decide which books will win the 2008 Explore Book Award, so what’re you waiting for? Get reading now, and cast you vote for the winner once you’ve found the book that you know is the perfect, must-read book.

If you’d recommend it to your friends, why not recommend it to the whole borough by voting for it?
