The Wiend Children's Centre provides a wide range of services and information for children, young people and their families right in the heart of Wigan town centre. The Centre houses "The Playroom", a purpose built play centre for children aged 0 to 11, as well as Wigan Children's Library, with its books, videos, story tapes, access to 10 PCs, and much more!

The Playroom
The Playroom is a purpose built indoor play environment that is both innovative and child-centred and is accessible to all children, their parents and carers. It provides an environment that is widely used by the public, families, schools, nurseries, the Borough's Social Services and Education Departments, the voluntary sector and other groups and agencies.

Within the Playroom are a number of Key areas. There is a large "Soft Play Area". This soft play environment is an exciting and stimulating facility that provides for both adventurous play and for quieter play sessions. It can easily be transformed from an area of wild and fun play into a cosy area for relaxation when combined with the lighting and sound system the Playroom has.

The Playroom has managed to retain a valuable area of free space for playwork, workshops or performances. This area can also be used for more formal presentations or meetings.

The Playworkers have a number of Play Resource Kits which they can use for play sessions. These include art and craft, music, outdoor sports, face paints and parachutes. There are also a large number of age appropriate toys that can be brought out for play sessions for specific age groups.

Wiend Children's Library
The Wiend Children's Library has a large selection of books for children from babies to teens. These include a selection for younger children, information books, books for babies, fiction for older children, a large teen selection and a reference section. New books are arriving every week so keep your eye on our "New Book" sections. You can borrow books for free for up to three weeks.

Story Tapes
A Wide range of tapes are available to suit children of all ages. Nursery Rhymes, songs, favourite stories and TV characters, many of which have accompanying books to help your child with reading. Many of the classic and popular children's books are also available on story tapes including authors like Enid Blyton, J.K. Rowling and Jacqueline Wilson. Story tapes can be borrowed free by children for up to two weeks, there is a charge of £1 for adults.

Videos & DVDs
Disney, Under 5's and children's films and cartoon's including many of the latest releases all available for only £1.75 for seven days hire. DVDs are £2.00 for seven days hire.

Computers
The Library has five computers with Internet access. They have a large selection of CD ROM's available for under 8’s which you can use at anytime. There is no charge for using these PC's. Tell a member of staff which title you want to use and they will load the disc for you.

Holiday Play Sessions
During every school holiday we run a packed programme of themed play sessions for children aged between 5 and 11. These sessions include drama days, arts and crafts, lots of games, role play, costume making, face painting, free playtime, parachute games, quizzes and competitions and lots of other fun activities.
The staff with the help of the children create an environment in The Playroom that encourages the children to use their imagination and have a unique play experience. Activities also take place outdoors with bouncy castles and "Wet & Wild" days being popular. These sessions are very popular so book early to avoid disappointment. SERVICES & CLUBS
The Library offers quizzes, colouring sheets, Under 5's jigsaws, photocopying, reading games, craft sessions, and last but not least helpful and friendly staff.

SERVICES FOR UNDER FIVES - UNDER FIVES PLAY SESSIONS
The Playroom provide four Under 5's play sessions every Week for children and their parents / carers. These sessions are very interactive sessions in which we try to actively encourage the adults to become involved in their children's play. Play is vital to a child's development and adults in their life can play an important part in this. Children can play with a wide range of toys, enjoy our soft play area and ball pond, join in an art activity, play games, help to tidy up and finish off with songs and nursery rhymes. Children love song time and parents can play a positive role in this by becoming actively involved and helping the children to learn the words and actions Parents can have a warm drink and a healthy tuck shop is also provided for all.

STORY TIME
The children's Library provide a free story time every Wednesday afternoon for children aged five and under. You can listen to stories read by one of our friendly and experienced members of staff. Then you can have a go at an art and craft activity before finally watching a video with a drink of juice. These sessions encourage your child to enjoy the magic of books and also help them to develop their social skills, such as patience and sharing. Most of all though they are lots of fun. Before or after the session you can enjoy the books in the library and choose some to take home to share with your child.

Reading is fun for all children and they are never too young to enjoy books.

BABY CLUB
The Playroom provide a Baby Club every Wednesday. These play sessions are for children aged two and under and their parents/carers. The Playroom provides a safe, exciting and stimulating environment in which young children can play and socialise with other children and adults.
It also provides an opportunity to meet other parents/carers who have young children. The Baby Club encourages parents/carers to spend time playing with their children and helping them to develop new skills.

The session is a drop in session that runs between 10 am and 12 pm. No need to book, just pop in anytime.
