Welcome to Playing Field Management

Due to financial restriction in budgets there has been limited investment in new changing room provision since reorganisation with the exceptions of Little Lane, St John St, Parsons Meadow, Leyland Park, Laithwaite Park and Scot Lane Playing field facilities.

Currently (Season 2007-08) we have 89 grass pitches and 17 mini grass pitches in use at 42 individual sites across the borough of Wigan.

With the exception of a number of sites, playing fields require significant investment in the drainage infrastructure to secure real benefits to playing surfaces, however we have been successful in improving the pitches at Laithwaite Park, Leyland Park, Parson’s Meadow, Ashfield Park. We are in the process of improving the drainage infrastructure at Miners Welfare, Platt Bridge. We have also created a new site behind Howe Bridge Sports Centre this site has 3 full size pitches and 4 9v9 pitches, both these sites will be ready for the 2008-9 season.

Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust in conjunction with local football and rugby forums developed a process for closing pitches during spells of adverse weather conditions to help protect grass pitches for future use. The information on pitch closures is available from 9:30am on Friday mornings by telephone answer machine message on 01942 777070. General enquiries for hiring sports pitches can be taken on 01942 488551 or enquiries relating to pitch development can be taken on 01942 488471 or e-mail parks@wlct.org
