Wigan Schools Cultural Service

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust offer an integrated provision to schools bringing together the unique learning resources, expertise and networks of archives, libraries, museums and the schools library service.

We offer an expert, experienced and professional service to support learning and school improvement by providing a wide range of high quality, cost effective library and heritage resources. Our resources include books, learning materials, artefacts, workshops and archives.

The service supports literacy and cross-curriculum working,  and promotes reading for pleasure.

Subscribing to the Service

Our annual subscription package consists of a core offer and access, through our extended offer, to additional services at a reduced subscriber rate.  This ensures that schools can make the best of its resources and use the Schools Cultural Service to enhance its offer to its pupils.

This offers the best value for money option to schools looking to provide a library provision for their pupils and is highly competitive compared to other schools library services in Greater Manchester.

Core offer

Schools are allocated “Loan Credits” allowing maximum flexibility and enabling each school, usually with advice from SCS, to tailor their package to fit specific needs and retain best value for money.

One loan credit can be used for any of the services below:

  • One project loan – 20 books and supporting material where applicable
  • One museum loan – up to 6 artefacts to support learning in the classroom
  • One class set – up to 35 popular fiction books
  • Half a days advice visit – professional advice on library related matters
  • Half a days follow up stock work – practical hands on help after an advice visit report
  • Heritage workshops

Loans are delivered free of charge to your school prior to the start of each term and collected after the term has ended.

However, outside these times loans can be collected from SLS base or your local library.

Heritage workshops are highly participative and designed to fully engage children in creative learning. They are facilitated either in school or in one of our Heritage venues.
