Situated in Leigh’s Turnpike Square, The Turnpike Gallery is a free
admission art gallery and library which is aimed to capture the culture,
creativity and imagination of all ages of the public.
The art gallery holds regular exhibitions, from the well-received,
interactive Audio Art exhibition that ends on September 9th to the Home
Environment exhibition which showcased the work or two sculptors who
work with natural materials.
The exhibitions last for around 1-3 months, however the gallery also
holds regular educational and fun workshops and activities for both
young people and adults. The workshops for children and young people
enable them to learn art through dance and movement and take part in
activities such as creating their own music or costume designing.
The Turnpike gallery is an extraordinary gallery that offers not only
attractive art work but hands-on activities, such as the aforementioned
Audio Art Lab, where a range of exhibitions are available for you to
have a go with. Local schools also get involved to create art work that
is displayed in the gallery. For example, Hindley Community High
recorded sounds using a computer, transferring them visually using
paints to bring both tradition and technology together. Young people
from as far as Scarborough and London love to get involved, creating an
atmosphere through sound which is known as creating Sonic Postcards.
The Turnpike Square holds regular events such as the recent ‘Hot on the
Square’ festival. The majority of the visitors of the show visit the art
gallery following the festival.
So why not make a day of it? Enjoy an outstanding festival and then
explore the fascinating art work in The Turnpike Gallery! The bottom
floor of the gallery is a library which holds workshops and activities
such as community workshops, reading and writing games, homework clubs;
and even internet courses!
