Band Profile: The Randoms
The RandomsThe Randoms - jaunty, divergent, slightly twisted, eccentric attention seekers, got together as they are now in Autumn 2003.  They are regulars on the Manchester and Liverpool circuits, quickly gaining a reputation as a band to watch and listen to during the debauchery of a weekend that doesn’t stop ‘til Monday. Listen to three songs at www.purevolume.com/therandoms recorded with producer John Kettle (Moco / The Marble Index), with whom they have just completed 12 uber quality tracks.

Fast Greg sings, Al 501 plays Guitar, Rob does bass, Ace plays guitar & synth and Sam’s the drums.

STYLE - No nonsense rock ‘n roll with a glam edge.
INFLUENCES
- Pulp, The Rolling Stones, Blur, Supergrass and David Bowie.
BACKGROUND
- Prior to the formation of the Randoms, founder member and principle songwriter Tim ‘Ace’ Matthews tour managed & engineered several British chart acts including Sweet Female Attitude.

In his quest to start a new band, Tim was re-united by a mutual friend with ‘Fast’ Greg Derbyshire whom he knew from high school.  It was apparent from the start that Greg’s commanding presence and vocal talent were perfectly suited to the front of the stage. Soon after Tim’s brother & charismatic lead guitarist Al Lomas joined.  He was followed closely by bassist Rob Rees, whom Tim had met through the local music scene and knew well from previous collaborations. The band tried various drummers and it wasn’t until autumn 2003 that Sam Shields completed the line up, who possessed both the ability and attitude the band had sought.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY

  • ‘The Randoms do exactly what it says on the tin, random caboodles of  rock history all thrown into the proverbial melting pot with a case of beers and the remnants of a debaucherous Friday night, resulting in a diverse sound that makes it easy to see why they’re adored by critics and fans alike’ – Wigan Music Collective
  • ‘The lead singer Greg towered over the punters with authority and had good connection with the Audience. With tight bass lines and accurate percussion style, the Randoms had quality written all over them like a stick of rock’ - hotpix.org.uk
  • ‘I would say that the Randoms did well enough to turn the crowd into an audience. People dancing away to the music and the cheering each song received went a long way with this band. But still it wasn’t quite enough for them, the singer working the audience, calling for them to ‘get louder’ But by the end of their set there didn’t seem to be many disappointed faces, they were too busy having a good time.' - banned.org.uk

  • ‘These joyously energetic lads are producing feisty rock n roll with an urgency that’s incredibly refreshing’ - high voltage

  • Rhythmic, pacey and lyrical are three words that spring to mind to describe The Randoms. Uncomplicated, straightforward guitar pop’ - Dave Chislett, (journalist, music promoter – FHM, The Mail, The Stage)
