For the past couple of weeks at The LINC Online, we’ve been running through our top tips for keeping safe, whether it’s online or on the street.

Yet rather than having us keep repeating the same old ‘dos and don’ts’ to you, we figured we’d turn ‘A Closer Look At…’ over to you guys, and invited the Gayton Gang from Winstanley to share with you their top tips from their recently produced ‘Teen Tips’ leaflet.

The group produced ‘Teen Tips For Staying Safe: What to do when you’re with your crew!’ after taking part in a number of workshops that made them think more about their own safety, and have since shared them with loads of other young people throughout Wigan Borough.

And now they’re sharing them with us too, in a special two-part feature.

Your Mobile

Mobiles are great to help you keep in contact with your friends, you can get pics of all your mates on them and they’re good for entertainment too.

They can help you stay safe as you can use them to text your mum and dad and always let them know where you are and they’re there if you ever need to make a call in an emergency, but:

• Be responsible and aware of the risks!
• Don’t flash your phone about.
• Don’t give your number to someone you don’t know.
• Don’t send picture messages to people you don’t know.
• Don’t put your music on loud when you’re on your own.

The Internet

The internet is fun, it helps with homework, helps us to keep in contact with friends, and you can download music, but use it wisely!

• Don’t give out your personal details, you could give a general, neutral name (such as your initials) instead.
• Don’t talk to people you don’t know.
• Don’t download things that don’t look or seem right, they might have viruses,.
• Don’t always believe offers on the internet, they are not always what they seem.
• Don’t meet up with anyone you don’t know.
• Don’t fake your age!

Smoking

Reasons why you may start smoking:

• Pressure from friends
• Maybe your mum and dad smoke, you might think it’s right.
• Because of stress! Such as arguments or difficulties at home.

Why you should STOP smoking!

• It can cause fatal lung cancer.
• It’s very ADDICTIVE.
• It will seriously harm your health and the health of others around you.
• It blocks your arteries, this can lead to heart problems.
• It is a BIG waste of money and a waste of time.

What to do to help your friends stop smoking:
Get information from doctors or websites on how to get help to stop. Explain to them all the reasons why they should stop.

Out and About

Our top tips for staying safe when you’re out with your friends or on your own:

• Never go somewhere quiet, like into the woods, or on your own, always be with someone you trust, even better with a group of friends.
• Don’t go to quiet places like the woods, fields or empty roads when it’s dark.
• When it’s dark always stick to places that you know well, don’t go to unknown places that you’re not sure about.
• Always carry a personal alarm if you’re out alone.
• Have a mobile phone with you and always make sure you have enough credit to make a call if you need to. Have it on silent and don’t flash it around.
• Always tell someone where you are going.
• Don’t speak to someone you don’t know.
• Don’t flash your money around.
• Always look out for yourself and your friends, be aware of any dangers!

Remember, 999 is free to call in an emergency. Don’t be scared to call if you need to but use it wisely and never make fake calls!!!
