‘Victoria’s Waiting’ is the debut album from
Wigan outfit This Devastated Fan. It’s a mightily impressive effort, and
delivers almost everything you could want from a rock record.
Seductive, groove-infested riffs, taut vocals slapping out headstrong
lyrics and a rhythm section like a funky thunderstorm are all present
and correct, working their way through a strong collection of monstrous,
hard-rock tunes and heartfelt ballads.
Like a slightly more seductive Pearl Jam with a hint of erstwhile
Brit-rockers Bush thrown in for good measure, This Devastated Fan
specialise in a the sort of rock music that wouldn’t be out of place
being played on mainstream radio or in front of thousands of sweaty
music fans at a packed MEN.
The likes of ‘Circus’ and ‘Elementary Girl’ are stomping, raucous tracks
which see frontman Robbie Cavanagh placing his deep, brooding vocal
stamp on a slamfest of driving guitars, subtle-yet-sultry bass and
uncomplicated drums which steer the whole thing in the right direction
with some force.
The last time we reviewed the band live, we commented on the band’s
confidence that really kicked in once they struck up the music, and here
on record, TDF capture that perfectly, a huge sense of confidence and
passion shining out like the headlights of a juggernaut on a pitch black
night.
It’s a confidence that really sets the band apart from many of their
unsigned contemporaries; there’s nothing here to suggest that you’re not
listening to a major label act with penchant for selling out world
tours, collecting a gold record or two en route. Heck, even the
packaging wouldn’t look out of place on HMV’s in-tore rack of ‘hot new
albums’ or whatever they have in there.
There’s nothing fancy here, nothing out to shock or surprise or disrupt
the norm; just track after track of great guitar music, pure and simple.
And it’s that, if anything, which will see This Devastated Fan go a
very, very long way.
