The Summer Festival Preview

It’s that time of year again, folks. A time when the line-ups for this year’s biggest festivals are announced and all the excitement starts to build.

The only question then is; which one? Do we go for the legendary Reading and Leeds Festivals? The metal mayhem of Download, the indie-heavy T in the Park or one of the many smaller festivals dotted out and around the country.

Not made you’re mind up where you’re going yet? We thought we’d help you out with a quick run down of some of the bigger summer festivals.

With a bill that’s part nostalgia trip – with a few reunited headliners and a couple of legendary acts – and part showcase for some of the best new bands around, T in the Park is where The LINC Online will be finding themselves this summer.

Why would we bother trekking all the way up to Scotland when Leeds is just a few hours drive away? Well, there’s three reasons:

1) R.E.M – Yes, they’re starting to get on a bit now, but the Athens, Georgia alt-rockers are far from being the next Rolling Stones just yet. With a back log of amazing songs, from ‘Orange Crush’ to ‘The Great Beyond’ by way of ‘Drive’, ‘Nightswimming’, ‘What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?’ and absolutely loads more, Michael Stipe and Co. will hopefully be the highlight of the summer.

2) Rage Against The Machine – We know they’re headlining Leeds as well, and if we’d known that before hand, we’d probably be going there instead, but more on that later. The revolution-loving rockers reunited last summer to play a series of shows and to once again start telling us all about how evil the world is and what needs to be done about it.

To be honest, RATM’s overly-political outlook can be a bit tiresome, but with immensely intense, invigorating songs, we can’t wait to see them all the same.

3) The Verve – Yes, another reunited group of legends hitting the T in the Park stage, this time from right here in Wigan. Having never seen our hometown heroes in action the first time around, we’re looking forward to following them up to Scotland for what promises to be a great show.

Elsewhere on the bill, there’s the amazing Counting Crows, who bring their luscious, piano-laden lyrical wonders to the UK, The Pogues, who were an absolute riot when we saw them a few Christmases back, and a whole host of top talent such as The Kooks, Amy Winehouse, Biffy Clyro, Aphex Twin, David Jordan and literally loads more.

Leeds Festival (August 22nd – 24th)

The cruellest joke on The LINC Online’s resident music reviewer is this: Having been an absolutely enormous Metallica fan for the past fifteen years, he’s never once seen them play live. Yet somehow, he’s had the misfortune to see those teenage dirtbags, Wheatus, a record four times.

And once again, he’ll be missing out, as whilst we send him off to cover T in the Park, the mighty Metallica will be headlining Leeds festival, along with the aforementioned Rage Against the Machine and The Killers.

And whilst that’s impressive as it is, the rest of the line up is just as good. Queens of the Stone Age bring their dirty desert rock, the awesome Tenacious D bring their comedy-fuelled carnage and Bloc Party bring, well, whatever it is Bloc Party do.

Then there’s the likes of Slipknot, former System of a Down mainman, Serj Tankian, Bullet for My Valentine, Editors and more.

If any of you are planning to go to this, consider you’re selves bloomin’ lucky!

Download Festival (June 13th – 15th)

You know, after looking at the line-up for Leeds, and now the line up for the annual rock fest that is Download, we’re really starting to think that we’ve picked the wrong festival to go to. Don’t get us wrong, the chance to see REM, Rage…, The Verve, Counting Crows and more all in one weekend has gotten us pretty excited, but just check out the line up for Download!

Glam Rock icons Kiss, pop-punk heroes The Offspring and Welshmen The Lost Prophets headline this year’s festival, which is rounded out by the likes of the mighty Motorhead, the incredible Incubus, the killer Kid Rock and the awesome Apocolyptica.

Something tells us Download is gonna be wild this year!

Glastonbury (June 17th -29th)

The legendary festival hosts yet more amazing bands.

Everyone from The Subways (who seem to get absolutely everywhere come festival season though we hear little else of them the rest of the year!) to Jay-Z by way of Pete Doherty, Fat Boy Slim, The Wombats, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Massive Attack, Will Young and Kings of Leon will be taking part in this year’s festival, perhaps making it one of the most eclectic yet!

Elsewhere

Featuring a line-up of people we at LINC Online have either never heard of or don’t really care about, The Wychwood Music Festival (May 30th – June 1st . www.wychwoodmusicfestival.com), sees acts such as The Divine Comedy, Duffy, The Proclaimers, Billy Brag and more take to the stage.

Meanwhile, a great line up including Muse, Stereophonics, The Futureheads, The Prodigy and The Hoosiers make up this year’s V Festival (August 16th and 17th. www.vfestival.com).

Or, if you fancy a trip further a field, then there’s always the Isle of Wight Festival (June 13th – 15th. www.isleofwightfestival.com ), who also have a pretty good line up this year.

Punk pioneers, The Sex Pistols, Kaiser Chiefs, N.E.R.D, The Kooks, Scouting for Girls, Kate Nash, One Night Only and more make up a pretty impressive chunk of the bill.

Wherever you’re going this year, have fun, stay safe, and if you fancy sending us a review, drop us a line at linconline@wlct.org
