Did you know that people in Wigan Borough
generate enough waste each year to fill Wigan’s JJB Stadium, The
Coliseum in Leigh and Orrell’s Edge Hall Road ground combined?
Rubbish is a big issue in our borough, with over 80% of our waste being
sent to a landfill. We need to change our ways or else we’re going to
end up buried in garbage!
Six Winstanley College students are showing people the way out of the
mess by running a recycling company called The Green Team.
The Young Enterprise Scheme project, set up by Gill Blake (17), Josh
Cockayne (16), Collette Roughley (17), Kirsty McCulley (17), Anthony
Scholfield (16) and Becky Hurst (16), has done a great deal to raise
environmental awareness in Wigan Borough during the past year.
Initially, the Green Team project was a non-profit recycling company,
selling re-cycled stationary to fellow students at Winstanley College.
Now the group is also going into primary schools and out to youth groups
around the borough, speaking to young people about environmental issues
and giving presentations on how to lead a greener lifestyle.
Green Team member Josh Cockayne said: “All our pencils, paper and
stationary are really good quality and eco-friendly and they have been
selling really well. People are very keen on environmentally friendly
goods at the moment and our stationary is reasonably priced, so people
have been quick to buy it up.
“We want to make children more aware of the environment. Young people
need to know about recycling and helping the earth. We feel we didn’t
get enough information on green issues as children, so we thought it
would be a good idea to improve this."
The Green Team have received lots of publicity and the scheme has been
backed by a number of important local figures, including Makerfield MP
Ian McCartney.
Mr McCartney said: “I was delighted to hear from The Green Team about
their ideas for promoting recycling in the borough.
“I am sure that given their commitment, their ideas can be transformed
into a real business while providing practical advice to pupils on
recycling.”
